Very useful for those of us who want to skip around. Generally, it's just an awesome live video. I really liked it and found it useful and informative.

M. I had the same bleak reaction to the squirrels. I thought, "these squirrels are a trick, a developer's trick." But then I realized that creation isn't a trick, it's a blessing. A gift.

It's really a double-edged sword. Depending on the day, fiction either connects with me INTENSELY or, on the days when I can't suspend my disbelief, I just find it trite and unimportant.

Re: Created Spaces: A Skeptic Plays Proteus

I haven't played Proteus because, I admit, I would probably start fidgeting and wishing for more in-game action buttons. =T

But I have had similar thoughts about games! Actually, I'm in the unusual position of being a Christian who doesn't get particularly excited about things like plants and big holes in the ground (aka The Grand Canyon)...I sometimes find simulated nature more interesting than actual nature. o_O I guess it's because the most interesting created thing to me is humans, and the most interesting thing humans do is create things, so man-made stuff ends up seeming like a little mini-Nature that's small enough for me to appreciate. So I've kind of had to work backwards from that and say, "If this Skyrim mountain is cool, probably mountains are also cool too I guess!"

This article also relates to why I ultimately get existential and bleak when playing procedurally generated things like Minecraft for too long. For some reason it's less inspirational to look at a spooky cavern when I know that it's traveled directly from an algorithm to my eyeballs without a designer glancing over its final form and saying "Yes, this will be a good cavern, yes."

Re: Created Spaces: A Skeptic Plays Proteus

Thanks!

Re: Created Spaces: A Skeptic Plays Proteus

Love this!

Re: It’s Complicated: A Love Letter to Videogames

Thanks!

Re: It’s Complicated: A Love Letter to Videogames

Love this!

Re: Vesper.5: Straining Toward The Future

Love this. While Theodor begins to discover the knowledge of Year Walking, he first see it's scientifically, seeing the monsters as antibodies, the creatures that defend the rules of the universe, but a point, he begins to see Year Walk as a trial, and he begins to compare the creatures to something else. The Huldra is compared to a temptress, while the babies are called considered angels, while the Brook Horse is considered to be death.

Finally the Night Raven and the goat are the most confusing. It's implied that unlike the others the crow and the Church Grimm are actively working together. But the Church Grimm is implied to be God in one of the posts. Year Walk is hated by the universe, it is considered a sin.

Also another thing that is interesting is that as Theodor loses his mind, he is told that he has broken the rules and must be punished. But Theodor has not Year Walked yet, so why is he punished. He lose his mind, his friends, and possibly his life.

Both Theodor and Daniel commit the sin, but only person who is innocent, the only one who survives, is Stina. It's implied that the Watchers give Theodor the knife, but why? So that way Stina can be saved.

The sinners are punished, and the innocent are saved. Don't break the rules of the universe.

Re: The Gospel and Games Journalism

I have always believed it is important to point people to God. Look for the opportunities. Also show the world what it means to be holy without being arrogant. I have found humble opportunities to witness my relationship with Christ in a variety of ways in this industry. Sure I have had my dealings with judgmental fellow believers who think I am being too worldly or others that think I am being too Godly.

I have lost track of how many times I have been able to present ideas and a perspective no one else does in the industry. Asking questions like: "can we have the choice of dressing the women more modestly?" Want to know something interesting? The Muslim community has been a long time supporter of FFG due to questions like that.

Re: Love in a Cold Universe: A Review of Year Walk

Seriously! There's this glimpse at the beginning, then hints throughout, but the moments of "love" are so tempered by the stark imperative to solve the puzzles that the theme is often eclipsed entirely by the game itself. This perspective is something that I had to nurture as I sat down to write this review, so it wasn't until well after I finished the game that I had this "realization". And even then you could almost say it was as much a decision as anything... AKA "I'm going to say the game is about this."

Re: Love in a Cold Universe: A Review of Year Walk

This is pretty brilliant, Jordan. You so succinctly put your finger on so many elements of playing video games that have a sacred feel to them, especially in the creator-player relationship. Definitely pulled a few quotes out of this piece that I will put up in my office.

Re: Safe Space: An Open Letter to Apple About Keeping Out the Riff Raff

Hey George, editor in chief of Game Church here, we completely agree with you. This article was meant to poke fun at Apple. We were trying to be sarcastic. If that was not clear in the article, we apologize.

We think it is hugely disappointing that Apple is banning these games because we agree that these games are about real world issues that should not be ignored.

Re: Safe Space: An Open Letter to Apple About Keeping Out the Riff Raff

There is so much wrong with this article, I can't believe it. "people are understanding things, thinking for themselves, and they want more" so let's ask apple to choose what we can and cannot see, to keep us safe, to keep us tame. All these scary issues that you feel these games touch on, believe it or not, are real. And pretending they're not doesn't change anything. And there are way more important issues in the world than what assumed themes are being incorporated in games in the app store

Re: Write for Game Church!

Give me some time.
